Autumn Approach
We're waddling toward wool and soup
Hello there! This is the latest mailer, which is basically a thing that goes out after the radio show has had a chance to get a few spins. More on the show later.
We’re entering the last segment of 2022 and, frankly, it’s been another weird year. Strap in, because it’s probably going to be all weird ‘til the sun explodes, and as Hunter S Thompson said: “when the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.”
Maybe if we aim for turning semi-professional at the least, we might just be able to enjoy ourselves while everything burns?
Fingers crossed.

GRUNGE ROUNDTABLE (MUCH SWEETER THAN IT SOUNDS, HONESTLY)
For fans of Nirvana, Soundgarden and the Seattle grunge scene of the ‘90s, there’s been a wonderful, casual chat with Krist Noveselic and Kim Thayil uploaded to YouToob.
They talk about their bands in the early days, when they exploded into fame, nerdy stuff about the recording and writing process, and of course, because both bands lost their singers in an untimely manner, there’s some tender stuff too. Very fun. Very interesting.
THE 1970s NEVER WENT AWAY, IT WAS JUST RESTING ITS EYES
In recent years, there’s been an increased interest in West Coast music, be it Yacht Rock, killer AOR bits, or harmony-laden sunshine pop with a ‘70s twist. Many bands try and emulate it and fall into terrible pastiche, but some are fantastic and show a genuine love for that period of music.
There’s Weyes Blood, Young Gun Silver Fox, Silvertwin, Drugdealer, Paul Cherry, Dent May, the always and utterly amazing Shintaro Sakamoto, The Lemon Twigs, Tennis, and many more.
I’ve made a playlist of this new wave of ‘70s music and couldn’t decide between Satin Jacket Revival or Future Yacht as a genre name, so I wussed out and went with both.
FBI MAKING POP MUSIC DIRTY
J Edgar Hoover has filth on his brain. He got the FBI to run checks on The Monkees, and sole surviving member of the group Mickey Dolenz has asked to see the files in question this week.
It got me thinking about how the FBI spent two whole years trying to work out what was being sung in ‘Louie Louie’ by the Kingsmen after a complaint by a high school. As they couldn’t understand what was being sung, they automatically assumed it was dirty, playing it at different speeds, backwards, forwards, and got nowhere fast. At no point did they get in touch with The Kingsmen’s singer, Jack Ely, which is hilariously foolish.
If you want to geek out, you can read the FBI file on it here.
UNDERGROUND PRESS IS THE BEST PRESS
Can you Gulp? You really should be able to by now, because Gulp is an amazing underground press magazine. If you can’t get it in person, there’s a great mailer and loads of killer bits shared on their socials.
Founded and launched by the stylish and very sexy Natasha Kay-Sportelli and Tomas Walmsley, it’s experimental, beautifully designed, and filled with fantastic stuff. You can support them here, and follow their IG here.
Music, cinema, art, opinion, it’s a joy.
YOU ALREADY THOUGHT HE WAS HOT AND COOL
Matt Berry, with his gorgeous voice and love of flares that fit nicely around the rear, is already someone we all love.
Well, he popped into Amoeba Records and went through some interesting LPs and, of course, they’re wonderful and he’s wonderful and the whole thing is a joy. What a fine figure of a man he is, and now, you’re going to want to go ‘round his house (which we’ll assume is a place filled with beautiful things) and listen to albums with him.
‘Til next time!
